Post Christmas Blog

You guys are getting this one early, for once. I had to write today as I start my Berlin adventure tomorrow, but I'll write about that next week. This week was a wonderful pick me up, and full of new memories.

Monday was all about preparations, getting together the final bits of christmas cheer ready. Including decorating the tree.

And putting up the manger, definitely added the touch I was missing. It was also the first and last time I will ever see Andreas willingly turn on christmas music.

Christmas eve is more the main day of Christmas here. You spend it with your family, have a large dinner and the gift exchange. We went over to the church for the childrens play before dinner. I was happy that it was the most abridged version I have ever heard/ seen. Play with interluding songs and a short word from the priest, all under 35 minutes!!! After the service we came home for a delicious 4 course meal, including deer.

Christmas day was spent with the Grand parents, and I don't ever think I've eaten so much in my life. We got all dressed up in the sunday bests and headed to Essen. A huge Brunch buffet awaited, then tea and cakes and round it out with a home cooked meal.

Thursday Erika and Andreas took me out to a museum that depicted the evolution of german living. Somehow I neglected to take a lot of pictures but I have these..

I want to build one of these hunting coaches.

German and Latin Letters

Thats pretty much it for the week I'm off tomorrow for a long adventure and well see what happens when I get back.

Happy New Year,

The Affection of a German Class While Ice Skating

This week was the hardest one I've had here in Germany. It's the first time I think I was noticeably homesick. Chances are you see that I posted two blogs today; this one and "Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend." On Monday when I returned from Münich I discovered a close Friend had passed away on Saturday morning. I won't go into the details since I wrote the memorial blog.

But I will expand a little on my "family." I have a constantly growing family feeling. It never ceases to amaze me how easily I can get to know people and quickly consider them family. I think this song best describes it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjO1F6oCab8

My family has grown even more here in Germany and I am truly grateful for it. They have really been a great help at dealing with the passing this past week.

I tried to keep my head up and continue life as normal.

Wednesday I headed down to the Ice rink with my class. We had a good time, and it was very comical watching everyone on their skates.

These kids really have grown on me. I never thought I could actually enjoy working in the school. But as time goes on I came to adjust and really enjoy my time. I feel a connection between with them. Maybe it's because we are all ausland students, or even it's the closeness in age. I think its because I give them a mutual respect, and push them to do more. I could simply give them the answers to their questions and let them go. But how do they learn then. I often wonder if they are really content to be simple laborers for the rest of their lives. Or if they believe that is all they can achieve, if they just need that push to be better to learn more to unlock possibilities. I feel that somehow I have inspired one of the students with my time there.

Later that day I had a meeting with the GIZ representative for NRW. Just a simple how are you doing, is there anything you need help with, is your living situation ok.... so on and so forth. She informed me that she was a little surprised I got the internship with the police. Apparently others had tried and always been turned down. I'm the first student to get accepted for a long internship. I'm also the first who went on a state hunt, and as far as we know the first participant to go hunting at all in Germany. I know this year we have a few people who are going; just yesterday Kyle (yall remember kyle) went hunting down in Saarbrucken.

After the interviews the group of us went out to the christmas market and a bar for casual conversation. Cole and Nancy joined us in Münster for these interviews so they where along.

We decided to also check out the Münster hall of peace for a audio tour. Very interesting history, by far my favorite is this....
Woodwork

and This petrified hand.
After a drink with everyone we parted ways, even though they were going to stay in town for another couple hours I had to leave. I had been invited to the apartment of my tandem partner Johanna for a glühwien drinking evening. After some trouble finding the house, I wrote the house number as 6 (which was a bakery) instead of 16. The evening was very enjoyable I made some new friends, and had lots of conversation in German, YAY.

Friday was our last day of class before the break, we had a Christmas Breakfast within our class. A light breakfast and conversation was greatly appreciated. By all of us.

As we sat there, and talked about our plans for the break, one of the girls asked if I would be returning after the break. I was surprised at how quickly the whole table was quiet, waiting for the answer. As I told them that I would probably be there until February, and then move to the Police, a feeling of sadness was detectable. They all had the I'm happy for you but do you really have to go look in their eyes. ... I told you I thought I was making some kind of difference here.

Saturday I finished my Christmas shopping, got the gifts wrapped, and placed them under the Weihnachtsstern in my room. We have a tree but we won't decorate it until Monday, so they will live here until then.                                                                                                                                                                                  I'm still waiting to hear that the package I sent home made it safe and sound. Hopefully also before Christmas, even though I'm doubtful.
Today is a relaxed day for me, just sitting around finishing these blogs. Later I will be going to my Host moms Christmas concert. Then after hopefully talking to the coffman clan back home, since I haven't talked to them in a while, and with the loss considered.

To everyone I wish a safe and warm Christmas and a Joyous new years. I'll probably wright a short blog on Christmas and post the Advent calendar I made.

As always,

Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend

As many of you know, I never had much in the way of family. I'll spare you the details for the time being. I ended up building a "family" from the close friends I have. I'd give my life for these people, they've made me who I am today and are still helping me grow.

My brothers
My new family.
These are the real family I had; (from left to right) Drew, Logan, Mom, Dale, and Me.
I had a few Great Aunts; Linda, Nancy, and Sandy. And they helped me through a lot, but I always felt I was missing some parts of my family.

I found friends to be helpful in Filling Gaps;

A whole group of them

Santi, Hannah, and Cat

Chenia
Then I met the Coffman Clan.
Dotti and Roger Coffman

The Coffman Anderson Clan

These folks took me in and made me one of their own, I might have well been a grandson to the Coffmans. Now with them became a few strange characters not pictured. One of those characters was Jack.....

Jimmy "Jack" William Pennington

Aug. 1, 1961 - Dec. 14, 2013

Go to http://www.dnronline.com/obituaries/view/4497 to see the Obituary.

Jack was a good friend of mine, even if he was in his early 50's. There were quite a few adventures with the old boy, he was a designated hunting/fishing partner, farm mechanic, part time tinkerer, shop manager, and so much more to me.

He loved to be outdoors, could hardly keep him inside. They practically had to tie him to the bed when he was in the hospital with Pneumonia a few years back.  He spent his days looking for deer on the back 40 of our land, or sitting in the shop working on an assortment of lawnmowers and weedeaters.                                                                                                                                      He was a good old West Virginia mountain boy. I will never forget the trip we took to his  "home place" for my 18th birthday. Willie, Jack, John and me took a three day weekend to go back to Harman WV. We left late on Thursday night to avoid traffic. As our caravan topped Afton Mountain we were met with almost a foot of snow. By the time we left on Sunday there was over 2 1/2 feet of snow on the ground.                                                                                                                                                                                           Jack became a close friend as time rolled on. We began to give each other a hard time, and the more we hunted together the closer friends we became. I still say that blazer had nothing on my jeep, and that .22 magnum couldn't put down no deer. Jack loved his sweets, and coffee. That was his basic diet I think, well that and a cigarette.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Jack;

you loved all of us over on the farm, just as much as we loved you. The farm will never be the same without you there. At least you are at peace now, Old boy. Jack I knew that you believed and for that I am glad. None of us have ever been catholic; but if we were, chances are we'd of prayed to St. Hubertus quite often. He is the patron saint of Hunters. One of his symbols adorns the Jägermeister label. The catholics have medals and coins that also depict him.

I bought two of these Medallions today Jack, one I added to my cross charm, the other will travel in my bag. If I should hunt, or climb another mountain before coming home. I will leave it in the woods for you. If it comes home with me I will take it to your home place and leave it there.

You also knew my love of tattoos jack and how I want to do a lot of memorial tattoos over time. I'm working on yours now my friend. I feel it will be a symbol of St. Hubertus with the .22 mag and a fishing pole adorning it. With Action Jackson written below. I'm not 100% sure yet, well have to let it mature a while.

Anyway Jack; Don't kill to many deer in heaven save some for me..... Maybe you where good enough for God to give you something besides that .22LR, he knows that thing can't bring em down.

We Miss you Action, Love ya Always,

Literature, Despair, and Climbing A Mountain in Bayern

I sit here a little sheepish and quite sore from a long weekend, well more specifically Sunday.
This week went a little slow but I definitely got my workout. Monday as I walked into school I was pulled aside by the Sport Unterricht (gym) teacher. She informed me that they needed a proctor for the boys that day, and that I was suppose to help her out. So we went over to the Gym and set up. The guys had an option to either play Basketball or Fussbal. I worked between the two groups, for the two hour class. I was surprised and how well I kept up with these guys, lord knows I was never a sports player and I was surprised I could even get the ball close to where I wanted it.

Wednesday was a wonderful day, I was so happy to see the sun. Here in Münster we usually have grey skies and fog to look forward to. However Wednesday the sun was out and shining and it was definitely well needed. I hadn't really noticed what the dreary weather had done to me until I had the Sun for comparison. I was suddenly filled with energy and ready to get out to a park. So after grabbing my book and picking up a cigar I was on my way. A sunny bench never felt so good to me before, and I was content to sit and bake in it.
Another first for me also occurred that day; I had my first haircut in Germany. Not really a Giant step, but something that I really was debating on just doing myself instead of paying for.  I had Andreas tell me where to find a good Frisor(Barber) and was in the chair before I knew it. Well as I walked in I completely forgot how to say "hair cut"and they realized I was an english speaker. Usually in Germany this means that your chance of German conversation is over. Thankfully, the two women who where in the shop continued in German. I was beyond happy. She asked what I wanted and told her to "Mackt was Sie Wollen ("do what you will.")Her friend and her snickered a bit but I was hopeful that Ï wouldn't come out with these ridiculous soccer player haircuts. Being the only one in the shop they where both having conversations with me, We discussed cultural differences and the idea of typical american and germans. The haircut was nice, typically what I get in the US kind. Basically a healthy trim and a shave. I will definitely be returning to this shop though!!

Thursday evening I headed out to meet with Johanna at a local cafe. Sadly Anika couldn't join us as she was sick. Either way we had a good conversation in German for the most part. We discussed a lot on what my career ideas are and the US system compared to the German system.

Friday being one of my short days I was out of class by 9:50a. I had made plans to head down to Münich for the weekend and was traveling via bus. I got to the train station and waited for MienFernBus to show up, 11 hours later I stepped out into Münich. I got lucky and one of the other PPPler's, Ryan, took me in for the weekend.

When we awoke on Saturday we had no plans of what to do, as we walked towards the bahnhof Ryan mentioned in passing wanting to see Dachou: A concentration camp from WWII. I mentioned that I was interested to see one before leaving Germany. Thus we decided our plans for the morning.

Walking into this place there where informational signs about the old town, but it wasn't until I passed through this that the dark uneasy feeling started.

The Gatehouse, road and train station for Dachau

Work makes you Free.

The feelings of solemness grew as we walked into the Crematorium. Then through the shower rooms, I was never so uneasy in my life. Its hard to express any more in words, but I'll give you the pictures.

Crematorium, each oven was capable of 3 bodies at a time.

Clothes where Deposited In these for Decontamination.

Sleeping Quarters

We met up with Laura and Jamie, after returning to the city, and explored the christmas market. Then Ryan and I headed down to a kino for The Hobbit. Great movie but definitely leaves you hanging, without any real climax.

But the real fun came on Sunday, when we all 4 headed to the Alps. I was excited to do some hiking again, I mean Münsters flatter than most paper. I sadly lost the name of the specific Mountain we did, but after all said and done we did between 2500-3000 ft asent.
Jamie and Laura

My treach tor the day

It wasn't a terribly hard asent while we had a pretty nice trail going over halfway up. Then the trail started to zigzag back and forth and the snow got about 3 ft deep. I envy Jamie, her light weight barely left a mark in the snow when she walked outside of Ryans tracks, While I was at least up to my knee and a good bit to my waist with every step. You forget that your actually walking on trees that are covered with snow until you break through the branches. It turned out to be a good bit more difficult than I had originally thought it would be, but I persevered and made it. The trip back down was when I truely realized the branches underneath. I blazed the trail down, and managed to catch my foot on some branches along the way. 4-5 times I ended up throwing myself sideways covering my head and rolling the next 5 feet. Praying the whole time not to fall down the steep embankments.

This trip nearly exhausted me, I debated turning back early I don't know how many times. Tho I persevered and topped that mountain, So now I have officially topped the Alps, Hoora!!! My legs where freezing by the end and I had snow packed into my pants leg halfway up my caves, but it was well worth it.

Side note of the weekend I get to cross two books off my reading list!!!! I finished A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway on the bus down and The adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain on the train back.

Oh I completely forgot the best news I received Yesterday!!! I GOT ACCEPTED TO INTERN WITH THE POLICE!!!! I got the letter late Friday but didn't actually see it until yesterday. It was such a relief to see this. Per my last blog I detailed my feelings of despair towards the silence of the department, and was becoming quite doubtful over the whole ordeal. This is the sigh of relief I needed, and maybe a bit of an Oh this is really happening moment. I'm the first participant ever to be given such a position. It's a lot to live up to..... But Bring it On! I'm Ready!!

With Sore Muscles and Great Pride,

This Post has been rated PG-13 (American) and G (German)

This week went by way way too fast, I can't believe that time is running out on me. Christmas is only 16 days away, new years 22 days and ~204 days until I start thinking of coming home. I found myself in a pretty bad predicament this week and have to say I'm really glad I have a host dad who is willing to "put foot to ass"when need be. With the cold setting in here, and even worse the Darkness, I find myself falling into a hibernative state. Now they had warned us, and then reminded us and then SCREAMED it at us; that the winters here where dark. That most former participants say that it is a depressive thing that happened during their stay. So this week I really didn't per-say accomplish much outside the house. I was content to stay inside this warm inviting atmosphere, and not have to face the cold.

Monday evening I headed down to a Cafè next to the A-Sea to meet with Anika & Johanna. Anika had ordered me the trial of a newspaper that helps you learn another language. We sat there and read them aloud, correcting each others pronunciation, and clarifying words/phrases.

They also surprised me with this awesome gift for my B-day. Locally brewed Beer, and it was delicious. I was beyond words, I never expected that. I guess now I can honestly call them friends....HEY I have German Friends. WHOOHOO

Tuesday I headed to an informational meeting at the Police Department. It was actually really boring. It talked over the different career options and how to achieve them, and then most of it was how to use the website. Staying awake and upright through the second half became a challenge, thankfully I managed.                                                                                                                                                            Update on my internship with the Police; There isn't much change. Since my meeting was canceled I was told to send my CV (Resumè) to the head of hiring. That went out the Thursday before our Thanksgiving and I haven't heard back yet. I think if I haven't heard anything by Thursday I'll wright an inquisitive E-mail.

Wednesday was an interesting day at the Geist schule. We spent the day working on a project that would benefit a charity. Although sadly I don't remember which one. Anyway my class would contribute by baking and selling Muffins. Seems easy right, we only have household science every week and cook. Of course not instead of doing it in groups we brought all 24 students, 2 interns (the third ran away) and F. Weber. We have 4 kitchen stations so we made 5 groups. 4 to cook and one to make the decorations.

So after a mishap with adding to much liquid in two groups, unfortunately the two I was suppose to watch. In my defence I was not only watching two route groups of boys but also being pulled in the direction by questions from others. I swore these guys knew the difference between a L and a CL. So we ended up doubling the recipes and worked out well.

Anyway after that period was over we still had muffins in the oven, F. Weber couldn't leave until the ovens were shut off. The problem came with she had a different class to go teach. So off I went to the Math class to start the day until she showed up. She had a very specific Idea of what I should do, such a great Idea. As you may know I at one point was really into attempting Origami and other Asian arts. I managed to perfect... well 1 the paper crane.

I've probably made enough of these to get my free wish (1000), and I'm still waiting on that magic bird. So when there is a fairly square piece of scrap paper set in front of me I just tend to start folding it, and out pops this crane. This is so bad I have even started doing it with the tags on tea bags.

You probably guessed that she had seen me do this, and then had me teach her. Her Idea was for me to teach the class to do so why we waited. Sure I can do that, so off with some square paper I went. Murphys Law I say Murphys Law!! I couldn't get these kids under control for the first 10 minutes of class. They were in the hallway and as I would bring one in the other left the room and went the other way. Finally another teacher came along and helped me out.  It took a little longer than it should have to fold some cranes.... like 6x as long. But in the end we had a dozen cranes on a desk.

Thursday a pretty hefty storm was suppose to come through Münster so I planned to stay in. Decided to take advantage of the time and get most of my card writing done for the holidays. Thankfully I got all done and ready. So keep an eye out for a card in your mailbox my close friends (should be about a week)!!!                                                                                         All the cards I had. are pictured to the Right. I had more than I needed for my mailing list.

For those following the advent calendar what was Friday...... Nicolas Tag!!!!!

I awoke to a gift from the Jolly man.  For those not here is some text.

a.      St. Nicholas Day is celebrated on December 6th  in Germany as well as in other European countries. On the evening before the 6th, children place their newly cleaned shoes in front of the door in the hope that Nicolas might fill them with nuts, fruits, chocolate, and sweets. If the children have behaved well, their wishes will be fulfilled. Children who have caused mischief will receive only a switch, which symbolizes punishment for their bad deeds.
b. The adherents of the Catholic Counterreformation did not quietly accept the diminishment of their saint. They responded to the practices of the unorthodox Protestants by making Nicholas a figure who visited families' homes on his appointed day and stood in judgment over children. If the young ones could answer religious questions and said their bedtime prayers faithfully, they received a gift from the sack that Nicholas' companion, Knecht Ruprecht, had slung over his shoulder. Those that slacked in their religious commitments got the switch or were threatened with being hauled off in Ruprecht's sack.
c. Today children in all the German-speaking regions, regardless of religious denomination, celebrate Nicholas tag. Ruprecht, who typically carries a basket filled with edible goodies for the children (and also the switches for the naughty children), has become Nicholas' constant companion. In German-speaking Switzerland, Ruprecht is known as Schmutzli.

Saturday was gift shopping.

AND NOW YOU FEATURED POST

So I think I have said how OK with the topic of sex is here in Germany. A 4 year old can tell you exactly how it works here, trust me I've seen it! To an american this is strange, where almost taught that sex is a taboo thing. Everyone does it but no one talks about it. The stork is a completely unknown creature, along with the cabbage patch.

So let me go into some details; I've seen plenty of nudity on German family T.V., there where plenty of nude swimmers (mostly elderly woman [insert shiver]) at the lake in Constance and Radolfzell, I had a 4 year old explain sex. And to top it off.... well you'll see.

(at this point some of you are horrified and debating leaving the rest to your imagination)

The local natural History museum was open on Sunday evening, after a well needed "Foot to Ass"maneuver, Bri and me where on our way over there. I had missed a field trip with my class (luckily) here and knew that the current presentation was called "Sex and Evolution." I had not expected what I walked into. I think at this point I should require you to verify your age,...

...but I think well use German Standards. So if you were ever born, proceed. The following photos contain sexually explicit material (US standards) that are intended for educational purposes.

Completely unrelated the other half the small museum was Whales and then Indians (the only permanent exhibit.).
