This week was all about getting back into routine as the winter break came to an end and I prepared for school to restart. For some reason this week I was also not feeling the best.
It started on Monday, I had an appointment with the dentist for what I hoped would be the last time in Germany. Unfortunately as we got underway we realized that there was more pain that it should have been. She ran a test and the cavity causing bacteria in the last root was still very strong. What does this mean for me? Regrettably it means that we cannot proceed from the inside of the tooth. We have to now remove the cap or the root where the bacteria is growing. Oh joy I need a root canal! Shes working on sending my case to another dentist that can do the operation, and then we have to make an appointment for after my internship starts. This was defiantly not what I wanted to hear, I was really hoping that this would be the last time we had to do that... Oh well.
Tuesday was spent in a park and by the lake for the evening, I wanted to get out somewhere nice and read a little. However the wind had other ideas, I couldn't hold my place for anything so I eventually came home to read. Bri visited us that evening to tell us about her new living situation and pick up a spare bike Andreas had. as we did a once over; oil chain, lower seat, check lights, check break, so on and so forth. We relized we had no lock for the bike, Bri would buy one later but for now we needed a temporary one,.... good thing we can all think outside the box. Bri's makeshift lock was made from a spare bike part meant to hold the fender in place and a pad lock. It will work for a temporary fix none the less but it was quite an evening trying to think of things to use for a lock.
Wednesday Began the 2014 school year for me. It was actually nice being back at the school. The students where surprisingly well behaved, for the first day after a break I was impressed. I think I may actually miss these kids when I leave in the next month.
I hadn't given yall an update on the state of the internship by the Police yet? Well part of it was planned as I wanted to be more sure of the situation before putting it out here. I'm not 100% sure that this will actually happen but I have High hopes. Last week when we called to the police with the inquiries of when I was to start, they didn't have a date yet.
They did however inform me on the holdup, which is that they are trying to send me through an academy first. WHAT??? Essentially they would like me to take a crash law enforcement class for foreign officers. The course is focused on officers (as in people of rank) who come to Germany to learn German policing and then return to their country to assist in developing a police force. This is looking better and better every step of the way. I'm not sure what exactly this course would mean to my future but it can only be positive!!!!!
The one thought I have over and over again every time i think about taking this course is 1. I will have a diploma that says I finished a German Police Academy Program, and 2. does this mean I get a badge at the end of it all? Now I know very well that this is extremely unlikely....even if I hope it's not. But I can't stop thinking about how awesome it would be to have a German badge to bring home with me, hang on my office wall and say "Oh yea that was from when I was in Germany and worked with their police force."
Thursday I made an advance on the Home front. I started doing things for school when I get back the the US and the first step was that I Filled out FASFA. nothing like a whole day filling out these government forms.
Friday I woke up and was definitely not well off. I ended up calling in sick and going to a doctor. Turns out I have an ear canal infection, Joy!! Anyway simple antibiotic solution and a topical anesthetic and I'm doing Better.
Either way Josh came down to Münster this weekend to hang around. Friday we simply hung around and had a delicious fish soup Andreas cooked. The real adventure was Saturday, We started out and headed for Enschede, in the Netherlands. A lovely town with a nice open air market, especially when sea food is your favorites. there was fresh fish every where. It was also enjoyable to have my..... host..... nope there's not a name for it, oh well Host brothers Girlfriend Jasmine along for the day. She made it very entertaining and comical. Below you have a picture of me (rare) standing with the ever so elusive Josh. These creatures tend to be camera shy and hard to photograph. However the standard glasses remained a must in even this picture.
After Enschede we headed to another town Gronau for the Rock and Pop museum. It was a really nice museum with a feature for Elvis Presley. Unfortunately there where no photos allowed so I can't show yall what I saw. The Museum was also more of an interactive experience showing the history through the decades as music progressed. One of the most interesting cases in the Museum, or should I say most shocking to see was the collection of Jimmy Hendrix's personal smoking apparatuses. And the most interesting to me was the guitar display, not only did it have all the most wonderful guitars from Fender to Ibanez, there was also the first synthesized guitar and the board that controlled it.
Sunday I finally slept after waking up repetitively from pain the nights before, thank you emergency medicine supply for being useful here. The afternoon was spent attempting to plan a trip to London. We just about have the travel and room details worked out, and Andreas is going to give us some ideas what to do and see for cheap so we should be set. The trip is a couple weeks away tho, not until after the mid year seminar.
Today I was home from school again, had a decent amount of pain when I woke up so I called the doctor to look at it again. When I went by the office It miraculously had almost completely reduced swelling. I still can't exactly hear out of it and there is pain but I'm doing OK. I'll be back to class tomorrow, hopefully with no issues.
From Recovery,
Cody A. Glick
P.S. Bri reminded me to mention that we also mad a Philly Cheese Stake Sandwich dinner on Sunday. They where delicious and definitely a well needed taste of home. By far the best part of the night was Simon saying, "Ok I need a fork and knife I'm to German to eat this that way."
